Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have elected Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro as the association’s new National President.
Olabiyi-Agoro emerged unopposed at PENGASSAN’s first Quadrennial Delegates Conference, held in Abuja on Saturday, succeeding Festus Osifo, who is currently the President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
His emergence marks the beginning of a new chapter for the influential oil and gas workers’ association, with the new president expected to draw on his extensive experience in the petroleum industry, industrial relations and trade union administration.
Olabiyi-Agoro is a petroleum engineer, labour leader and industrial relations strategist with more than two decades of professional experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
He currently serves with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). Before joining the regulatory body, he built a broad technical and operational career with major industry organisations, including Baker Hughes and EA Temile and Sons.
The new PENGASSAN president also has strong academic qualifications. He holds a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom; a Post Graduate Certificate in Computing from London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom; and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso.
He is also an alumnus of Government College Ibadan.
Olabiyi-Agoro has been actively involved in organised labour and trade union administration for several years. He currently serves as Chairman of the TUC Oyo State Council and has occupied a number of leadership positions within PENGASSAN.
Between 2022 and 2023, he served as the association’s National Financial Secretary, having previously been National Auditor from 2020 to 2022. He also served as Chairman of the Baker Hughes PENGASSAN Branch between 2016 and 2020.
Over the years, he has participated in various local and international training programmes focused on leadership, negotiation, industrial relations and other areas relevant to trade union administration.
With his combination of technical knowledge, industry experience and labour leadership, Olabiyi-Agoro is expected to bring a broad perspective to the leadership of PENGASSAN as the association begins a new administration.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected president pledged to make workers’ welfare a major priority while building on the achievements and legacies of his predecessor, Festus Osifo.
He also expressed his commitment to advancing the interests of PENGASSAN members and strengthening the association’s role in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
