Senator Victor Umeh, the senator representing Anambra Senatorial District, on Tuesday condemned the continuous extortion and harassment of motorists and commuters by officers of the Nigerian police on the highways.
This was a sequel to a motion moved by Senator Onyekachi Peter at the floor of the Senate, titled: “Urgent Need to Halt Extortion, Intimidation and Harassment of Motorists and Commuters by the Police on public roads.”
Contributing, Senator Umeh said there was a need to focus more on the punishment of officers involved in the harassment and abuse of commuters and travellers on the highways. He suggested summarily dismissal of the officers involved.
The Senate asked IGP Egbetokun to direct his men to immediately stop the extortion, intimidation and harassment of motorists and commuters on highways.
