Comfort Stevens Industries, a joint venture involving companies from the United States, China, and Brazil, has announced its intention to set up a footwear manufacturing facility in Owerrinta, Abia.
The announcement was made by Dr. John Nwankwo, the CEO of Comfort Stevens, during a meeting with the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti.
Dr. Nwankwo highlighted that the factory will have the capacity to produce 15,000 shoes daily. This initiative aims to enhance local manufacturing, generate employment opportunities, and reinforce the “Made-in-Aba” brand.
Levi Sotomayor, one of the foreign partners, stressed the significance of a public-private partnership for the success of the venture.
He also mentioned plans to establish an artisan academy, which will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology, bolster local manufacturing capabilities, and support the large-scale export of finished leather goods.
Another foreign partner, Hon Chik, pointed out that the project would integrate Abia State into the global footwear industry, which promises significant economic benefits for the region. He expressed strong confidence in the project’s potential for success.
Governor Otti expressed his enthusiasm for the investment and reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalizing local manufacturing and creating a business-friendly environment.
He emphasized the critical role of local production in economic development and commended the resilience and skill of Aba’s current shoemakers.
Governor Otti highlighted that one of his administration’s main priorities is job creation, often placing a higher value on employment opportunities for the youth than on company profitability.
He voiced his administration’s willingness to collaborate with Comfort Stevens in establishing an academy for artisans to enhance footwear production in the state. He acknowledged the need for training to equip local shoemakers with the necessary tools, skills, and patience, suggesting that Comfort Stevens not only focus on production but also on running a finishing school for the youth. Introducing new technologies, he noted, would significantly improve their output.
The Governor also assured that the state government would ensure a steady power supply to the Owerrinta shoe factory. He mentioned ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the dualization of the road from Imo River to Umuikaa Junction, which will facilitate smooth transportation to and from the factory.
