In a major political development, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move was confirmed after a closed-door meeting held on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba. Sir Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, verified the governor’s defection during a telephone conversation with Vanguard.
In a parallel announcement, Senator James Manager disclosed that former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had also left the PDP for the APC. Manager revealed that the decision followed an intensive six-hour deliberation involving key political figures at the Government House. He noted that not only the current and former governors, but also the Speaker of the House, the state PDP chairman, and all 25 local government chairmen have collectively agreed to join the APC.
Explaining the rationale behind the mass defection, Manager emphasized, “We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat,” suggesting the move was essential for political survival and future prospects.
The decision comes after months of strategic consultations with political stakeholders and is said to be aimed at ensuring the long-term development and stability of Delta State.
Governor Oborevwori, who secured victory in the 2023 gubernatorial election under the PDP platform, was warmly received by senior APC officials. Political observers see this realignment as a significant strategic move that could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
