Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has firmly rejected recent remarks made by Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, concerning the credibility of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in the state.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo described Obi’s comments—which alleged the election was not free and fair—as baseless, misleading, and an affront to the democratic will of Edo citizens.
“The governorship election in Edo State was conducted with the utmost transparency and fairness, adhering strictly to established standards of electoral integrity,” the statement read. “Both local and international observers recognized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for ensuring a level playing field throughout the process.”
Governor Okpebholo expressed disappointment that a statesman of Obi’s stature would make what he termed “unsubstantiated claims” seemingly motivated by political bias rather than a commitment to truth or democratic principles.
“The assertions made by Mr. Obi lack credible evidence and appear to serve political ends rather than reflect a sincere concern for electoral justice,” the statement continued. “It is disheartening that someone of his national standing would seek to delegitimize a transparent process endorsed by impartial observers.”
The Edo State Government has called on Peter Obi to withdraw his statements and publicly acknowledge the legitimacy of the electoral outcome. Okpebholo stressed the importance of unity and constructive political engagement, urging all stakeholders to uphold and respect the democratic choices made by the people.
“The peace and stability of Edo State are non-negotiable,” Governor Okpebholo emphasized. “We will not allow baseless rhetoric to undermine the democratic progress we have achieved. The voice of the people is clear and must be respected.”
