President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Lagos ahead of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He was warmly received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 4:15 pm on Tuesday by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside other top government officials.
As part of the commemoration events scheduled for Wednesday, President Tinubu—who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government—is expected to deliver a keynote address alongside other West African leaders. The special occasion will reflect on five decades of regional integration and cooperation.
Also expected to speak at the event is General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving West African leader who signed the original ECOWAS treaty in 1975. His participation underscores the historical significance of the milestone celebration.
In addition, Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will deliver the welcome address, while former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, will present a comprehensive review of ECOWAS’ 50-year journey and achievements.
Following the anniversary event, President Tinubu is scheduled to commission several high-profile infrastructure projects in Lagos on May 31. These include Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the tax credit-funded concrete road leading to the Lekki Deep Seaport, the flag-off of Section II of the coastal highway project, and the 7th Axial Road—key developments aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic growth.
The President is also expected to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque in Dodan Barracks before making his return to Abuja.
