Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Legal Team Alleges Selective Justice Over Criminal Charges

The legal representatives of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who currently serves as the senator for Kogi Central, have strongly criticized what they describe as a disturbing trend of selective justice. This follows recent criminal charges brought against the senator by the Federal Government, despite a dozen official petitions she had previously submitted remaining unaddressed.

In a detailed statement released on Wednesday in Abuja and signed by her counsel, Uju Nwoduwu, the legal team revealed that between March and May 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan filed 12 separate petitions. These petitions, according to the team, raise serious allegations including cyberstalking, threats to life, defamation, and even an alleged assassination attempt. However, none of these complaints have reportedly received attention or action from the Nigeria Police Force or other relevant security agencies.

The statement emphasized that the public rightfully expects law enforcement agencies and prosecutorial bodies to maintain fairness, uphold the rule of law, and deliver impartial justice—principles that the senator’s legal team believes are currently being undermined in her case.

Raising further concern, the legal team highlighted that while the senator’s complaints remain stagnant, criminal charges stemming from counter-allegations—made by influential individuals she had previously named in her petitions—have been rapidly processed. These individuals include Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello.

“This selective and seemingly biased approach to justice deeply undermines confidence in the legal process,” the statement noted, warning against the dangers of politicized legal proceedings.

The legal team also disclosed that among the unaddressed petitions are serious incidents such as the abduction and attempted assassination of a protocol officer working closely with the senator—further amplifying the need for immediate and thorough investigation.

Although currently outside the country on personal engagements, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has acknowledged receipt of official communication regarding the charges filed against her. Her legal team confirmed that she is prepared to appear in court for arraignment once a date has been scheduled.

“Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remains committed to due process and the rule of law,” the statement affirmed, adding that she deeply appreciates the public outcry against what the legal team has termed “an extremely curious criminal charge.”

In conclusion, the legal team renewed its call for unbiased investigations into all the pending petitions and reiterated their demand that justice be applied equally and fairly, regardless of status or political influence.
