Federal Government Mourns Kano Sports Contingent Tragedy

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Federal Government of Nigeria following the devastating road accident that claimed the lives of members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the recently concluded National Sports Festival.

The tragic incident, which occurred in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, led to the death of over 20 individuals—including young athletes, officials, and support staff—who were returning home after representing their state in a celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and national pride.

In an official statement released on Saturday, Dikko described the loss as “unspeakable,” emphasizing that it goes beyond the affected families and the Kano State community, touching the heart of the entire nation.

“This is an unspeakable loss not only to the families of the deceased and the people of Kano State but to the entire country,” he said. “These were individuals who had dedicated themselves to excellence in sports and carried the hope of a brighter future for our nation through their passion and commitment.”

Dikko affirmed the Federal Government’s solidarity with the Kano State Government, the broader sports community, and every family affected by the tragedy. He acknowledged the immense sorrow caused by the incident and pledged the Commission’s full support during this difficult period.

“As a Commission, we are already working in consultation with relevant authorities to provide necessary support and ensure that the memories and sacrifices of those we lost are honored in a befitting manner. It is our duty to ensure such heroes are never forgotten,” he stated.

He further offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed and speedy recovery for those injured in the crash. “May Almighty Allah comfort all of us and give us the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss,” he concluded.
