In a notable leadership shakeup, the Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Abayomi Akinruntan, has officially resigned from his position. Alongside him, the Assembly’s Majority Leader, Mr. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, also stepped down from his role—though only Akinruntan provided a reason for his decision.
Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, cited the need to align with the state’s established conventions in the distribution of elective offices as the reason behind his resignation. His letter was read during plenary by the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jayeiola. Akinruntan, notably, was absent from the session.
In contrast, Ogunmolasuyi—who represents Owo and was present at the plenary—did not give any formal explanation for his resignation. His stepping down is especially significant, given that he and Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami hail from the same Owo Local Council Area, just as Akinruntan shares roots in Ilaje with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. These alignments underscore the sensitive political balancing act at play in the state’s leadership.
Following Akinruntan’s resignation, the Assembly moved swiftly to fill the vacant seat. Hon. Ololade Gbegude, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated by Hon. Oluwatoyin Japheth (Akoko North East Constituency) and seconded by Hon. Chris Ayebusiwa (Okitipupa Constituency 1). His nomination was unanimously accepted by the House.
Speaker of the House, Hon. Olamide Oladiji, praised both Akinruntan and Ogunmolasuyi for the maturity and sense of duty they displayed during the transition. He described Akinruntan as a “peaceful ally” who had consistently supported the House, and lauded Ogunmolasuyi as a “stabiliser and dependable ally” in the legislative chamber.
The peaceful handover was seen as a positive example of orderly transition within the political structure of the state, setting a tone of unity and cooperation as the Assembly continues its work.
