Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has emphasized the pressing reality of climate change and urged Nigerians to confront its growing threats with urgency and collective action.
Governor Zulum made this passionate call on Monday during a condolence visit to the Niger State Government House in Minna, following the devastating flood incident that recently struck Mokwa Local Government Area.
While expressing solidarity with the affected communities, Governor Zulum announced a financial donation of N300 million on behalf of the Borno State Government. He explained that the contribution was aimed at complementing the relief and recovery efforts of the Niger State Government in responding to the disaster.
“With what is happening across the country, particularly the volume of rainfall we are witnessing, it is clear that climate change is real,” Zulum stated. “We must wake up to its challenges and act quickly to reduce its impact. The earlier we take concrete steps, the better for our communities and environment.”
The governor also stressed the importance of collaboration between various levels of government and international organizations to combat the adverse effects of climate change. He called on the Federal Government to establish a comprehensive support system for state governments facing climate-related crises.
“Niger State alone cannot shoulder this burden. There is a need for federal intervention, and I believe President Tinubu will act swiftly to provide the needed assistance,” Zulum added.
In his response, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Governor Zulum for his visit and generous support. He described the gesture as both timely and deeply meaningful, reinforcing the bond between the two states.
Governor Bago lauded Zulum’s leadership qualities—his empathy, resilience, and proactive governance—stating that they continue to inspire leaders across Nigeria. He assured that the donated funds would be used transparently and efficiently for the benefit of the flood victims.
Governor Bago also reiterated the state’s commitment to public awareness campaigns, especially in advising residents to avoid settling in flood-prone and coastal areas to prevent future occurrences.
