Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has called on Nigerians to recognize June 12—Democracy Day—as more than just a national celebration, urging citizens to embrace it as a powerful symbol of the people’s collective will and a victory against autocracy.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Minna by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described Democracy Day as a significant moment for deep reflection on Nigeria’s political journey and the resilience of its democratic values.
He emphasized that the 2025 Democracy Day should not only mark Nigeria’s democratic gains but also serve as an opportunity to recommit to the ideals of participatory governance and national unity. “This year’s Democracy Day should be a time to reflect on the progress made, renew our commitment to the democratic process, and uphold the principles of democracy in order to succeed as a nation,” Bago stated.
The Governor paid tribute to Nigeria’s democratic heroes and heroines—men and women who sacrificed for the freedom and political voice Nigerians now enjoy—asserting that their efforts must never be forgotten or allowed to go in vain.
Governor Bago acknowledged the many benefits democracy has brought to Nigeria since the return to civilian rule in 1999. These include improved transparency and accountability in governance, a vibrant political environment marked by competition and diverse opinions, as well as enhanced civic participation.
Despite these gains, he noted that Nigeria still faces significant challenges on its democratic journey. “This is why more still needs to be done,” the Governor added, highlighting the need for ongoing electoral reforms, increased civic awareness and participation, and stronger democratic institutions capable of protecting the vulnerable, upholding justice, and ensuring equal opportunity for all citizens.
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to democratic governance, Governor Bago pledged to continue delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Niger State through the “New Niger Agenda”—a vision committed to inclusive leadership and sustainable development.
He concluded by urging citizens to continue praying for leaders at all levels of government to promote purposeful leadership and reiterated his unwavering commitment to the ideals of the “New Niger Project.”
