In response to persistent security challenges in parts of Delta State, the Delta State House of Assembly has introduced a bill seeking to amend the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Law. This was announced by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, during a press briefing commemorating the second anniversary of the current Assembly.
According to Guwor, the primary objective of the proposed amendment is to enhance grassroots security by recruiting local indigenes who possess in-depth knowledge of their local terrains across various Local Government Areas. These recruits are expected to collaborate with established law enforcement agencies by providing crucial intelligence and support to boost security efforts within the state.
The Speaker revealed that the bill has already scaled through its first and second readings and has now been referred to a Joint Committee on Special Bills, Peace, and Security for further scrutiny and comprehensive evaluation.
Highlighting the achievements of the 8th Assembly during its second session, Guwor commended members of the House for their dedication and collective commitment to effective lawmaking. He noted that the Assembly had deliberated on several bills and motions that address key areas such as education, healthcare, youth empowerment, infrastructure, environmental protection, security, and economic development.
“In total, the House received 16 bills during the period under review—comprising eight Executive Bills and eight Private Member’s Bills. Out of these, seven were successfully passed by the House, with six already receiving assent from His Excellency, the Governor. The remaining bill is currently undergoing final preparations for gubernatorial assent,” the Speaker stated.
On the sensitive issue of ward delineation in the Warri Federal Constituency, Guwor appealed for calm, dialogue, and responsible engagement. He stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence among the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo communities.
He said: “The matter is being addressed by appropriate Federal Government agencies. We must all embrace peace—not as a sign of weakness, but as a strength rooted in wisdom. Regardless of our ethnic identities, our unity is our greatest strength.”
This legislative move is part of the broader efforts by the Delta Assembly to ensure responsive governance and improved security for all residents of the state.
