During the commissioning ceremony of a newly completed road in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, delivered a moment of levity that drew laughter and applause from attendees. The event marked the official opening of a collector road linking Mabushi to the Judges’ Quarters in Katampe, a project handled by a Chinese construction company.
The light-hearted atmosphere took center stage when the official music band performing at the event delighted the audience with a humorous musical skit. In a playful tribute to the Chinese contractors, the band’s lead singer launched into a comical imitation of a song sung in what resembled the Chinese language.
The performance caught Minister Wike’s attention, and clearly entertained, he jokingly responded: “Now that my band can sing in Chinese language, I’ll now increase their fees.” His remark sparked laughter and enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Sensing the crowd’s amusement, the band seized the opportunity to build on the moment. They broke into a catchy chant, repeatedly singing, “Agreement is agreement,” before ending with another lively, Chinese-sounding phrase — much to the delight of everyone present.
The impromptu exchange added a spirited and memorable touch to the official commissioning event, highlighting Wike’s rapport with performers and attendees alike.
