Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) concluded a two-day strategic retreat on Saturday, signaling strong party cohesion and collective commitment to Nigeria’s socio-economic transformation. The meeting, which brought together 23 APC governors—excluding Sokoto State’s Dr. Ahmad Sokoto, who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Idris Gobir-Danchadi—was hosted by Edo State’s Governor Monday Okpebholo in Benin City.
In a key resolution, the governors expressed unanimous support for the recent resignation of the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing the move as part of the party’s natural evolution and internal strengthening. Reading the communiqué on behalf of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, reiterated the governors’ confidence in the APC’s future.
> “The PGF acknowledged the resignation of the National Chairman of the APC, His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in tandem with the party’s continued evolution,” Uzodinma stated. “The Forum reaffirms its unshakable belief in a united, just, and prosperous Nigeria, committed to delivering bold reforms, deepening trust in institutions, and accelerating socio-economic development across all regions.”
Economic Recovery and Governance Strengthening
The governors praised the increase in fiscal transfers to states and highlighted a growing wave of investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy. Several APC-led states, they noted, are now successfully attracting both domestic and international investments. The Forum commended ongoing reforms including professionalized procurement processes, digital governance upgrades, and improved regulatory frameworks aimed at unlocking productivity and enhancing inter-state competitiveness.
Security and Surveillance Enhancement
The Forum lauded the efforts of security agencies in combating criminality and safeguarding national sovereignty. Emphasizing the need for greater investment in surveillance infrastructure and improved welfare for frontline personnel, the governors reaffirmed their support for inter-agency coordination, community policing, and grassroots intelligence gathering.
They also extended heartfelt condolences to victims of insecurity in Benue and Niger States, expressing full support for President Bola Tinubu’s national security initiatives, particularly actions taken in Benue.
Support for National Reforms and Social Equity
The Forum expressed confidence in Nigeria’s macroeconomic reforms—such as fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, and debt rationalization—as necessary steps toward long-term stability. However, the governors stressed the importance of ensuring that economic recovery translates into real, inclusive growth.
They called for enhanced investments in critical areas including food security, job creation, poverty eradication, MSME support, and expanded social safety nets to democratize economic gains.
Federalism and Sub-National Empowerment
Reaffirming their commitment to constitutional federalism, the governors emphasized the pivotal role of state governments in driving economic renewal. In line with Section 13 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), they pledged to deepen decentralization and prioritize the welfare of citizens.
Party Unity and Leadership Renewal
The PGF acknowledged the recent influx of new members—including governors and National Assembly figures—into the APC as a testament to the party’s robust leadership and the credibility of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
They encouraged Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to rally behind President Tinubu and the APC in building a safer, more inclusive, and progressive nation.
Welcoming New Allies
A key highlight of the retreat was the official reception of Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori into the fold, signaling growing cross-party collaboration and national alignment.
The two-day meeting concluded with a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s current economic, social, security, and political trajectory, with the governors affirming their resolve to align with national objectives and remain faithful stewards of the APC’s values.
