INEC Receives 12 New Applications for Political Party Registration

As preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received an additional 12 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties. This brings the total number of applications submitted to the Commission to 122.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, the Commission noted that the new applications were received as of Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The names of the applying associations, along with their acronyms, addresses, interim Chairmen, and Secretaries, have been published on INEC’s official website and other public platforms.

Interestingly, INEC observed a case where the interim Secretary of one unregistered association defected to another group—both of which have not yet been formally registered as political parties. The Commission expressed concern over such inconsistencies and advised the promoters of the various associations to ensure stability in their leadership structures. According to INEC, leadership changes or inconsistent information could result in delays in the processing of their applications.

To streamline the registration process and ensure transparency, INEC emphasized the need for consistency in the details provided by applicants, particularly with regard to leadership and addresses.

Additionally, the Commission addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022, which empowers INEC to review declarations and returns in elections if they are found to be made involuntarily or in violation of the law, regulations, or guidelines. Mr. Olumekun explained that the provision has led to varied interpretations, making it necessary for the Commission to issue supplementary regulations, guidelines, and manuals.

He confirmed that clear procedures and timelines for such reviews have now been established and included in Supplementary No. 1 to the main Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022. These documents have also been made available to the public via the Commission’s website and other communication platforms.

In conclusion, INEC reiterated its commitment to due process and transparency in the registration of political parties and called on aspiring political groups to adhere strictly to the requirements set out in the Electoral Act and the Commission’s guidelines.
