The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has expressed profound grief over the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London at the age of 82.
In a heartfelt statement signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, IPAC described Buhari as a patriotic leader, elder statesman, and exemplary military officer whose life was dedicated to the service of Nigeria.
The council paid tribute to Buhari’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s political evolution, highlighting his unwavering belief in democratic ideals. Despite initial setbacks, Buhari demonstrated remarkable perseverance by contesting the presidency three times— in 2003, 2007, and 2011—before eventually securing victory in 2015. IPAC hailed this journey as a powerful testament to his resilience and commitment to democratic processes.
“His persistence and belief in democracy remain a shining example for Nigeria’s evolving political landscape,” the statement read.
Reflecting on his public service career, IPAC noted that Buhari’s tenure spanned both military and civilian leadership. He first led the country as a military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, before returning as a democratically elected president for two consecutive terms from 2015 to 2023.
The council emphasized the lasting significance of Buhari’s leadership during pivotal moments in the nation’s history, stating that he played a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s socio-political development.
IPAC further praised Buhari’s commitment to discipline and transparency, recalling his famous War Against Indiscipline (WAI) campaign and his bold stance against corruption. These principles, the council stated, were central to his leadership and continue to inspire leaders across the country.
“President Buhari was a man of integrity who championed the War Against Indiscipline and confronted corruption head-on,” the statement emphasized.
IPAC also highlighted Buhari’s contributions to fostering national unity in a culturally diverse and sometimes polarized Nigeria. The council described him as a unifying figure who consistently worked toward promoting peace and cohesion across regions.
“He dedicated himself to the service of the nation, leaving behind a legacy of patriotism and resilience,” Dr. Dantalle said.
Extending its condolences, IPAC offered sympathies to Buhari’s immediate family, the government and people of Katsina State, and the entire nation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. May God grant Nigerians the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the council concluded, also offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the late president.
