Senator Ali Ndume has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the late Nigerian leader as a father figure, mentor, and patriot whose integrity and unwavering service to the nation have left an enduring legacy.
In a moving tribute released on Sunday in Abuja, the Borno South Senator said the news of Buhari’s passing came as a profound personal shock.
“This evening, I received with profound shock the news of the passing of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR),” Ndume stated, adding that the loss was both a national tragedy and a deeply personal blow.
Senator Ndume paid glowing tribute to Buhari, portraying him as a leader of immense humility, sincerity, and simplicity — qualities that defined his approach to governance and national development.
“I held him in the highest esteem, not only as a national icon but as a personal mentor whose unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s progress inspired me greatly,” he said.
Reflecting on their relationship, Ndume shared how their bond was forged through mutual respect and genuine affection. He noted that many who observed their interactions often assumed he was Kanuri, given the playful exchanges they shared, steeped in Fulani-Kanuri cultural nuances.
“Our bond was one of sincerity and mutual admiration,” he recalled. “People often mistook me for a Kanuri man because of the light-hearted cultural banter we frequently enjoyed.”
Ndume emphasized the profound impact Buhari had on his life, both politically and personally. He described the late President as a steadfast supporter who recognized and nurtured his potential during critical moments of his journey.
“In President Buhari, I have lost far more than a leader. I have lost a personal pillar — someone who believed in me, guided me, and stood by me when it mattered most,” he said.
He also recounted his last meeting with Buhari in Daura, Katsina State — the former President’s hometown — describing it as an encounter marked by warmth, laughter, and timeless wisdom.
“That final visit to Daura remains etched in my memory. It was filled with humour and valuable counsel, traits that always defined his character,” Ndume noted.
Concluding his tribute, the senator offered heartfelt prayers for the repose of Buhari’s soul.
“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal peace, and admit him into Jannatul Firdaus. Nigeria has indeed lost a rare patriot. I have lost a father,” he said.
