Tinubu Declares Public Holiday, Sets Up Committee for Buhari’s State Burial

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee to organize a state burial for former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London.

The Federal Government also declared today a public holiday in Buhari’s honor, in line with the seven-day national mourning declared earlier. Buhari’s burial will take place at 2pm today in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following the arrival of his remains at noon.

The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, includes several ministers and security chiefs. It is tasked with ensuring a dignified farewell for the late leader.

President Tinubu also directed ministries and government agencies to open condolence registers, while central registers have been opened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

Tight Security, Emotional Tributes in Daura

Heightened security has been observed in Daura and other parts of Katsina State. Family members, friends, and local residents have thronged Buhari’s residence, mourning a man remembered for simplicity, discipline, and generosity.

Dignitaries Mourn

Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Nana Akufo-Addo visited Vice President Kashim Shettima in London to pay their respects. Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, revealed he was hospitalized in the same London hospital where Buhari passed away.

Former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Gbemisola Saraki, among others, praised Buhari’s legacy of anti-corruption, integrity, and humility.

Government Institutions Suspend Activities

Federal Executive Council (FEC): A special session initially scheduled for today has been postponed.

National Assembly (NASS): Legislative sessions are suspended until July 22 to allow lawmakers participate in the burial.

Final Farewell

Vice President Shettima, accompanied by top officials including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, led a delegation to London to retrieve the late President’s body. The government urges Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s values and legacy of discipline and service.
