Kaduna Police Ban Obi Birthday Rally Citing Security Concerns and Clash with Party Primaries

The Kaduna State Police Command has officially banned a proposed rally organized in honour of Mr. Peter Obi’s birthday celebration, citing credible intelligence reports and potential threats to public peace and safety.

According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the rally—which was scheduled to take place on the same date as several political party primaries for the upcoming bye-elections—posed a serious risk of disruption and violence. The police said intelligence at their disposal indicated that criminal elements were planning to hijack the event to incite unrest and cause a breakdown of law and order.

The statement emphasized that the rally’s timing and location would interfere with party primaries already scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). These primaries are set to be held in designated areas across Kaduna State, many of which overlap with the proposed rally routes. As political parties had duly informed the police of their activities in accordance with protocol, the Command underscored the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding unnecessary clashes between opposing groups.

While the Command reiterated its respect for the public’s right to assemble and express support for political figures, it firmly reminded citizens that all political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended in Kaduna State until the official commencement of the 2025 electoral season as outlined by INEC.

To that end, the Kaduna State Police Command warned that it would not hesitate to take appropriate legal action against any individual or group who defies this directive or attempts to hold unauthorized gatherings, stressing its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring public safety throughout the state.
