Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, has disclosed that the team is still awaiting the $100,000 reward and other benefits promised to them by the Federal Government after their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade confirmed that none of the commitments announced by the government have been fulfilled so far.
When asked if the players had received the promised cash reward, she replied, “We have not received our money, but hopefully, it will be paid. They have not paid; all the promises, we have not received anything.”
Ajibade, who captained the Nigerian women’s national team to their record-extending WAFCON title, recalled that after their victory, President Bola Tinubu had honoured the players and their technical crew with national titles of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The President had also pledged a cash prize of $100,000 for each player and a three-bedroom apartment as part of the team’s reward package.
While receiving the Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu lauded them for their “indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage,” describing their success as a historic milestone for the country. However, Ajibade’s revelation indicates that the promised rewards are yet to be delivered.
