Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has cautioned former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, over his recent critical remarks about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement released to Saturday Vanguard and titled “Babachir Lawal: A Call for Reflection and Responsibility,” Mumuni underscored the need for restraint, responsibility, and maturity in political commentary. He stressed that while constructive criticism remains an integral part of democracy, it should be delivered in a manner that promotes dialogue and fosters unity rather than division.
The APC stalwart’s response comes on the heels of Lawal’s recent interview in which he strongly faulted the direction and policies of the Tinubu-led government. According to Mumuni, such unguarded remarks, if not thoughtfully presented, risk undermining broader national goals of unity, stability, and effective governance.
“It is essential to recognise the weight of our words, especially in the political arena where public perception plays a crucial role,” Mumuni stated.
Reflecting on his past political interactions with Lawal, particularly during the build-up to the 2023 general elections, Mumuni recalled how they once shared discussions on ambitions and national development. He urged Lawal to revive that spirit of constructive engagement.
He further advised the former SGF to carefully consider the long-term implications of his public statements, stressing that political leaders should prioritize comments that strengthen public confidence in governance.
“Let us engage in dialogues that uplift and unite rather than divide,” Mumuni emphasized, calling on political stakeholders to cultivate an environment built on mutual respect and the national interest.
