The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticised the proposed upward review of salaries for political office holders, describing the move as highly insensitive given the current economic challenges facing Nigerians.
In a statement issued in Abuja by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, the party argued that the proposal is ill-timed and urged the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to withdraw and reconsider the idea.
According to the LP, rather than advocating for pay raises for politicians, the Commission should be focused on championing improved wages for Nigerian workers, who continue to bear the brunt of rising inflation and harsh living conditions.
The statement further warned that such a salary adjustment could deepen public anger, worsen citizens’ distrust in government, and place additional strain on the country’s already fragile finances.
The party called on the Federal Government to redirect its priorities towards policies that will ease the burden on ordinary Nigerians, particularly through a review of the national minimum wage to reflect the realities of the economy.
LP also urged citizens to remain united in demanding accountability, transparency, and people-centered governance, stressing that fair compensation for workers must take precedence over boosting the benefits of political office holders.
