The North Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM) has called on Nigeria’s leading political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the North Central region in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
In a communiqué issued after its meeting in Abuja, signed by its chairperson, Prof. K’tso Nghargbu, the group argued that the North Central remains the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian President or Vice President since Nigeria’s independence, insisting that the time has come for the region to take its turn at the nation’s leadership.
The NCRM emphasized the North Central’s immense contributions to the country’s stability, growth, and unity. It noted that the region has made significant sacrifices for national development — including hosting the Federal Capital Territory, providing hydroelectric power, and supporting agricultural and mineral resources through initiatives such as groundnut pyramids and tin mining.
“We will no longer accompany other zones as escorts, backbenchers, spectators, or political underdogs to the glorious location called Nigeria. Being the only geopolitical zone that has never produced a civilian President or Vice President since independence, the time for North Central to lead the country is now,” the communiqué read.
The group further highlighted the North Central’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity, pointing out that it is home to major groups such as the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, as well as numerous indigenous communities. This diversity, according to the NCRM, uniquely equips the region to foster inclusivity, tolerance, and unity in governance.
It stressed that granting the North Central the presidency in 2027 would not only strengthen national cohesion but also serve as a clear statement of fairness and inclusivity in Nigeria’s political system.
Rejecting what it described as “tokenistic gestures” of offering the zone party chairmanship or other secondary positions, the movement declared that its singular demand is the presidency.
The communiqué also recalled the North Central’s unwavering loyalty during the Nigerian Civil War as proof of its longstanding commitment to the unity of the federation.
Calling on Nigerians across all zones to rally behind its cause, the NCRM pledged that leadership from the North Central would usher in a new era of cooperation, stability, and development across the country.
