Makinde Convey Power to Deputy as He Embarks on One-Month Vacation

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially notified the state House of Assembly of his plan to proceed on a one-month vacation, spanning from August 29 to September 29.

The notification was contained in a formal letter addressed to the Assembly, which was received and read during an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.

Ogundoyin explained that the governor’s action was in line with Section 190(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which requires a state governor to transmit a written notice to the legislature before proceeding on leave.

In the letter, Makinde formally requested to hand over the duties of his office to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who will function as acting governor throughout the vacation period.

“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the deputy governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as acting governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, September 29,” the letter stated.

Acknowledging the communication, Ogundoyin assured that the Assembly would extend its full cooperation and support to Lawal in ensuring smooth governance during the governor’s absence. He reaffirmed the lawmakers’ commitment to constitutional order and the seamless continuity of state administration.

With this formal notification, Lawal is expected to assume full responsibilities of the governor’s office from August 29 until Makinde’s return on September 29.

Meanwhile, the Assembly, which had earlier embarked on recess on August 3, is scheduled to resume plenary on September 16.
