The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has handed a six-year prison sentence to Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra agitator, after finding him guilty of several terrorism-related crimes.
The judgment, delivered on Monday, established that Ekpa incited terrorism and was actively involved in the operations of a terrorist organisation between August 2021 and November 2024.
According to Finnish outlet Yle, the court noted that Ekpa leveraged his large social media following to heighten unrest and fuel violence in Nigeria’s South-East.
A three-judge panel described him as “a key figure in a militant separatist movement” seeking to carve out a Biafra state from Nigeria. The court further ruled that Ekpa facilitated the supply of weapons, explosives, and ammunition to armed groups in the region through his network of contacts, while also promoting violent actions through repeated posts on X (formerly Twitter).
Beyond the terrorism convictions, the court also found Ekpa guilty of aggravated tax fraud and violations of Finland’s Attorneys Act.
As of the time of this report, his legal team has not released a statement on whether an appeal will be filed against the ruling.
