Wike caution PDP Against Moves to Bring Back Peter Obi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against ongoing discussions about the possible return of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to the party.

In recent weeks, reports have circulated that some PDP leaders are making overtures to Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party platform. The move, according to them, is aimed at convincing him to rejoin the PDP and potentially emerge as its presidential flagbearer for the 2027 elections.

Obi has, on his part, declared that if elected president, he would only serve for one term of four years, insisting that this period would be sufficient to reposition Nigeria.

Notable PDP figures such as Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, have publicly confirmed efforts to persuade Obi to return.

However, Wike, during a media chat on Monday, dismissed the idea as both “dangerous” and “hypocritical.” He argued that Obi had previously condemned and abandoned the PDP, describing it as a party riddled with rot, only to now be considered for a comeback due to political ambition.

“To what purpose? Bring Obi to where? You want to kill the party? Obi was the one who said the PDP was rotten. So now the party is suddenly good enough for him? Ambition can push people even to Satan’s house,” Wike said pointedly.

The FCT Minister stressed that bringing Obi back would not only weaken the party’s credibility but also erode whatever ideological foundation still exists within the PDP.

“If you want to destroy this party, go ahead and bring Obi. There is no way such a move can be based on ideology or principle—it will be driven only by ambition. And that is the beginning of the end,” he added.
