Nigeria experienced yet another power collapse on Wednesday as electricity generation on the national grid dropped drastically from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5MW between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
Shortly after the collapse, the Nigeria National Grid X handle, which provides updates on power distribution across the country, announced that “system restoration is in progress.”
In a follow-up update, the X account disclosed that electricity load allocations to all Distribution Companies (DisCos) across the country had dropped to zero, with the exception of Ibadan DisCo.
For context, “DisCo load” refers to the amount of electricity (in megawatts, MW) allocated to each Electricity Distribution Company from the national grid.
Confirming the situation, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a statement to its customers explaining that the blackout was caused by the sudden loss of supply from the grid at 11:23 a.m.
The statement read:
“Dear Valued Customers, please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas. Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
