The eldest son of the late former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, Samuel, has called for a full-scale investigation into his father’s sudden death, describing the circumstances as “shocking and inexplicable.”
Samuel, who revealed that he had seen his father a day before the incident, said he decided to open a case after failing to get a clear explanation for what transpired.
“I saw him the day before. So, it is very shocking to see this happen. That is why I opened the case to find out how he died, because I wasn’t getting any explanation. It has been very tough, and I just want to do my best to understand how he died. There has to be an explanation, and that explanation is what we are looking forward to,” he explained.
Suspicion surrounding Akingboye’s death intensified after a disturbing photograph of his body, showing visible bruises on his head, began circulating. While initial reports indicated that he passed away quietly at his Victoria Garden City, Ajah residence in the early hours of Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the image raised doubts about whether his death was natural.
Further controversy erupted when an overseas-based investigator, Olujimi Lijoka, in a viral video, alleged that N205 million was suspiciously withdrawn from the late politician’s account just hours after his passing. According to him, the funds were spread across three different accounts. Lijoka urged members of the Ikale community to demand justice and not allow the matter to be swept under the carpet.
There were also unconfirmed reports suggesting that Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, might have sustained injuries during a domestic quarrel. However, his daughter, Michaella, dismissed such claims, cautioning Nigerians against relying on unverified information.
“I urge the public to debunk everything that has been posted on blogs and social media. Everything is not the truth. We believe the police are carrying out their investigation diligently, and the truth will surely come to light. The whole family stands with the police,” she stated.
Meanwhile, detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, have visited the late politician’s residence. Five domestic staff members were reportedly taken in for questioning, while physical and biological evidence was collected from the scene.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Moshood, assured the bereaved family and the public that the investigation would be thorough. “He was said to be hale and hearty, and his body was later found in his compound. No effort will be spared in uncovering the true cause of his death,” he said.
