President Bola Tinubu has called on political leaders from the South-East to emulate the visionary and inclusive political style of the late Dr. Michael Okpara, former Premier of the defunct Eastern Region.
The president made this appeal on Friday during the inauguration of the newly renovated and retrofitted Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Abia State. Represented by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, Tinubu described Okpara as a statesman who ensured that the South-East played a central role in Nigeria’s nation-building efforts.
He praised the late Premier for positioning the region at the heart of national politics, stressing that his inclusive approach remains a worthy example for today’s leaders.
Tinubu commended the Abia State Government for transforming the auditorium into a modern landmark that now serves as a befitting tribute to Okpara’s legacy. He also emphasized that his administration holds the South-East in high esteem, which is reflected in its commitment to inclusive governance and balanced socio-economic development across the country.
The president explained that his visit to Abia was to commission several projects designed to enhance the welfare of the people.
“Some of these projects are federal, while others are executed by the state government,” he noted. “But whether federal or state, what matters most is their impact on the lives of our citizens.”
Governor Alex Otti, in his remarks, recalled that the Michael Okpara Auditorium had been abandoned for many years before his administration began its renovation in late 2023. He expressed pride in the quality of work delivered, assuring that the facility now stands as a structure worthy of admiration.
The event was graced by top government officials, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, former Deputy Governor Ude Oko-Chukwu, and several dignitaries from within and outside the state.
