ABUJA — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged residents of Abuja not to return politicians who failed to deliver in the past to positions of power, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is “changing the narrative” through visible and impactful projects.
Wike made this appeal on Tuesday during the flag-off ceremony for the rehabilitation of the Old Keffi Road, a 15-kilometre stretch linking Kado Village to Dei-Dei Junction. He described the project as another fulfilled promise by President Tinubu and a direct response to the long-standing demands of residents and traders in the area.
According to the minister, the project is part of the ongoing emergency infrastructure interventions approved by the President since 2023 to enhance development across the FCT.
“This is the first time in the history of Abuja that this level of development is taking place simultaneously, and it is happening under President Tinubu,” Wike declared. “Those who had opportunities in the past failed to deliver. We must not bring them back to power. This administration is truly changing the narrative for Nigerians and for the FCT.
“We gave them a first chance—they failed. We gave them a second chance—they failed again. If we make the mistake of giving them a third chance, they will destroy everything,” he added, receiving cheers from the crowd.
Wike further noted that the territory is witnessing an unprecedented scale of infrastructure development, revealing that 27 additional project flag-offs are scheduled in the coming days—a first in Abuja’s history.
“This government is working tirelessly to improve the lives of Nigerians and residents of the FCT. Seeing is believing. You can see the roads, schools, and other projects taking shape. Do not be deceived by people who come with empty promises,” he warned.
Highlighting the importance of the Old Keffi Road, Wike described it as a critical route for traders and commuters. The project, awarded to Lubrik Construction Company, is expected to enhance mobility, promote safety, and boost local businesses along the corridor.
The minister also directed the construction company to engage local youths, women, and artisans for both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Beyond road infrastructure, Wike disclosed that the FCT Administration had awarded the rehabilitation of Government Secondary School, Dei-Dei, while 73 other schools across the territory were currently under construction, with more planned.
In her remarks, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritizing people-oriented projects and commended Wike for his leadership and commitment.
“This road is a vital lifeline that serves thousands of commuters daily. Its rehabilitation will shorten travel time, improve safety, and stimulate socio-economic growth along this corridor,” Mahmoud stated.
She assured residents that the administration would maintain the pace of infrastructure renewal and development across the FCT.
