The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the continued demolition of private properties and businesses by government agencies in various parts of Nigeria.
In a statement shared on his official X handle, Obi described the actions of state governments as unjust and inhumane, particularly because many of the demolitions were reportedly carried out without prior notice or due process.
He said:
> “I wish to restate my firm condemnation of the deliberate destruction of people’s properties and goods by government authorities at any level, especially without adequate notice. The recent demolitions of citizens’ structures and the loss of their goods and investments remain deeply condemnable.”
Obi argued that it was unacceptable for the government to engage in such activities at a time when millions of Nigerians were already struggling under severe economic hardship.
> “An administration whose policies and approach have already pushed millions into poverty within just 29 months should be showing compassion, not inflicting more pain. Instead of lifting citizens out of hardship, these demolitions are worsening their suffering,” he said.
According to Obi, the demolition of shops and structures not only destroys livelihoods and weakens small businesses, but also jeopardizes the economic stability of hardworking Nigerians.
> “Many of these shops contained goods worth billions of naira—representing years of sacrifice and investment. What legal justification allows the destruction of private property not linked to any criminal activity, and without notice or due process?” he questioned.
Obi further called for accountability, urging Nigerians to reflect on whether such actions truly serve the public interest or simply represent an abuse of power.
> “Citizens deserve protection for their investments, livelihoods, and dignity. Urban development and enforcement must always respect the rule of law and the rights of the people,” he added.
He warned that failure to address such injustices could erode the foundation of Nigeria’s economic growth and social stability.
> “Every citizen has the right to build a life through honest work, and that right must never be trampled upon,” Obi concluded.
