India Prime Minister, Narendra Modi Resigns

On Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi resigned from his position.

This followed the cabinet’s recommendation to dissolve the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament. Modi submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, who accepted it and requested that he continue in office until the new government is formed.

An official from the President’s House explained that Modi’s resignation was part of the protocol followed before the formation of a new government. This procedure comes into play after general elections in India.

Earlier that day, the Election Commission of India released official data indicating that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is set to form the next government.

The announcement came after Modi had already declared victory, with his coalition securing more than half of the parliamentary seats while votes were still being counted.

The election, which spanned six weeks, saw nearly one billion eligible voters participating.

Celebrating the victory, Modi addressed his supporters at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, stating, “The National Democratic Alliance is going to form the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people. This is a victory for the world’s largest democracy.”
