George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, recently urged members of the Organised Labour to approach their demands for a national minimum wage and the restoration of old electricity tariffs with more caution.
Speaking at the National Executive Council meeting of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Abuja, Akume characterized the National Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) actions, such as the shutdown of the National Grid, as potentially treasonable felony.
He emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of Nigerians but expressed concern over the revenue loss incurred by the Federal Government due to the Labour’s actions.
Additionally, the Senate voiced apprehension regarding the consequences of the National Grid shutdown and disruptions to hajj flights during the nationwide strike for a new minimum wage.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio labeled the grid shutdown as economic sabotage rather than a legitimate form of agitation.
The Labour movement halted the National Grid on Monday but restored it on Tuesday as part of their industrial action to push for a new minimum wage.
