Joy In Imo State As Governor Hope Uzodimma Swears In New Acting Chief Judge, Two Commissioners

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has officially sworn in Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu as the new Acting Chief Judge of Imo State. The ceremony, held at the Government House in Owerri on April 4, 2025, also saw the inauguration of two newly appointed Commissioners: Professor Bernard Ikegwuoha and Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Egu.

Justice Nzeukwu’s appointment comes in the wake of the removal of the former Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Chikeka, who was dismissed by the National Judicial Council (NJC) following allegations and confirmation of age falsification.

In his address during the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Uzodimma reiterated his administration’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the independence and credibility of the judiciary in Imo State. He described the recent judicial shakeup as a critical turning point, emphasizing that the incident with the former Chief Judge had necessitated a comprehensive review of the records of all judges appointed by the state.

According to the governor, this review was carried out collaboratively by the Imo State Government and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to verify the eligibility and integrity of judicial officers. The outcome of this thorough process, he noted, paved the way for the appointment of Justice Nzeukwu, which was done strictly in line with the constitutional provisions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Governor Uzodimma called on the JSC to expedite the selection process for a substantive Chief Judge for the state. He also urged all members of the judiciary to see their role as a sacred trust, reminding them of the importance of upholding integrity, the fear of God, and unwavering commitment to justice, fairness, and equity.

Speaking directly to the newly sworn-in Acting Chief Judge, the governor encouraged him to lead the judiciary with dignity and honor, stressing the need to rebuild public confidence in the judicial system. He concluded his speech by praying for divine wisdom and guidance for Justice Nzeukwu as he embarks on this important responsibility.

In his acceptance remarks, Justice Nzeukwu expressed heartfelt appreciation to Governor Uzodimma and the Judicial Service Commission for the trust and opportunity given to him. He assured that he would not take the responsibility lightly and pledged to champion a judiciary that embodies transparency, professionalism, and accountability.

“The time for complacency is over,” he stated firmly. “Our goal is to restore public faith in the judiciary and uphold its status as the last hope of the common man.” He also appealed to judicial staff to exercise patience, maintain professionalism, and resist any form of external influence.

He assured the governor that both he and Dr. Egu would bring their experience, dedication, and energy to bear in serving the people of Imo State, while actively contributing to effective and impactful governance.

Also speaking at the event, Professor Bernard Ikegwuoha, who spoke on behalf of himself and Dr. Chioma Egu, conveyed deep gratitude for their appointments. A former Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ikegwuoha thanked the governor for the renewed confidence and pledged their full commitment to the goals of the Uzodimma-led administration.
