Africa’s richest man and Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has announced a bold commitment to invest N15 billion over the next five years toward the transformation of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, Kano State. Formerly known as Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST), the institution is set to undergo major upgrades aimed at positioning it among Nigeria’s top three universities.
Dangote, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university, made this announcement during the university’s 5th combined convocation ceremony held on Saturday. He stated that the funds are earmarked for a comprehensive five-year development plan that will enhance infrastructure, improve learning environments, and increase student and graduate opportunities.
The planned projects include the design and construction of new student hostels and classrooms, a world-class multipurpose computer laboratory fully equipped with internet facilities, and the installation of a mini solar power plant to ensure consistent electricity supply. Additional initiatives involve the development of a befitting Senate building and the provision of post-NYSC and employment opportunities for top-performing engineering graduates and those in related fields.
“This five-year development plan will be executed in close partnership with the university’s Governing Council, with a structured project management system in place to ensure timely and budget-conscious delivery,” Dangote stated.
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai revealed that upon taking office, he inherited a liability of N3 billion. However, the administration of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has already cleared over N2 billion of this debt. He also disclosed that more than 30 out of the 40 academic programmes offered by the institution have now received full accreditation.
Governor Yusuf, present at the convocation, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving the university’s infrastructure. He announced the approval of road networks and drainage systems within the institution and hinted at additional planned interventions.
The ambitious initiative by Dangote and the support from the state government signal a promising future for ADUSTECH, with the potential to become a leading hub for science and technology education in Nigeria.
