Saraki to Lead PDP Reconciliation Committee

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF), alongside a coalition of former governors, has appointed former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, as the chairman of a newly established seven-member reconciliation committee. The committee’s mandate is to foster unity and address internal disputes within the party ahead of two crucial events: the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27 and the upcoming national convention in August.

The announcement was made by the PDP-GF Chairman and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, during a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday night following a high-level meeting. The gathering included incumbent PDP governors, a significant number of former governors, the party’s acting national chairman, and key members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

Governor Mohammed explained that the meeting was convened to tackle pressing issues threatening the party’s unity, many of which have gained public attention. He emphasized the need for reconciliation and open dialogue among party stakeholders to ensure a successful NEC meeting and a smooth convention process.

“We are here with all our serving PDP governors and several former governors, alongside party leaders and NWC members. Our goal is to address existential issues and bridge any gaps to guarantee a united front moving forward,” he stated.

According to Mohammed, the committee will work to resolve misunderstandings and internal grievances, helping to mend relationships and unify the party’s leadership. “This is an opportunity to close ranks and make sure there are no ill feelings or misgivings. We are leveraging the experience of our former governors to enrich our reconciliation process,” he added.

Responding to questions about recent defections from the PDP, including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed expressed optimism. He acknowledged the defections as part of the dynamics of democracy but reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to strengthening its base and reclaiming lost ground.

“Rather than weaken us, this situation has brought us closer. We are determined to reinforce our strongholds and ensure that PDP continues to produce governors where it has historical influence,” he said.

While the full details of the meeting were not disclosed, Mohammed confirmed that key issues included internal litigations and tensions between party members. He hinted at possible interference from the APC but refrained from making definitive accusations.

The seven-member reconciliation committee comprises:

Dr. Bukola Saraki (Chairman)

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara

Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau

Governor Peter Mba of Enugu

Senator Seriake Dickson

Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo

Former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia

Also present at the meeting were governors from Enugu, Zamfara, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Osun, and Oyo states; Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike; Secretary of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Governor of Kaduna, Ahmed Makarfi; and several former governors and senior party figures, including Aminu Tambuwal, Sule Lamido, Samuel Ortom, Gabriel Suswam, and others.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade also attended.

Governor Mohammed reassured PDP supporters nationwide that the party remains active, united, and focused on regaining its political prominence.
