Delta APC Dismisses Recall Move Against Senator Dafinone

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has firmly rejected attempts by some constituents to initiate a recall process against Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central in the National Assembly. The party described the move as “dead on arrival” and an act of mischief fueled by ignorance and political opportunism.

Senator Dafinone was elected in the 2023 general elections on the APC platform to represent Delta Central Senatorial District. However, nearly two years into his tenure, a group under the aegis of Nigeria Polling Units Chairmen Forum (NPUCF), led by Comrade Nicholas Evwienure, has called on him to resign voluntarily or face a recall.

The NPUCF accused Senator Dafinone of poor performance and lack of meaningful representation. Evwienure, speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting, expressed concern over the Senator’s perceived silence in legislative matters despite being the only representative of the Urhobo nation in the Senate, which he noted is the fifth largest ethnic group in Nigeria.

He further criticized the Senator’s commitment, stating: “The business of representing people is a serious one and requires more rigorous dedication in all ramifications, but this is clearly missing.”

The group has reportedly instructed its members to begin the process of collecting signatures from eligible voters across Delta Central in a bid to trigger the recall procedure.

In response, the Delta State APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, issued a strongly worded statement condemning the recall initiative. The party labeled it a “farce” and a “mischievous exhibition of ignorance,” dismissing the legitimacy of those behind the move.

According to the statement, Senator Dafinone has been widely commended for his performance, citing his impactful legislative contributions, effective representation, and commitment to development within the district. The APC emphasized that the timing of the recall campaign coincides with rising recognition of Dafinone’s achievements, suggesting ulterior motives behind the attack.

The party also questioned the credibility of the NPUCF members, stating that they are neither card-carrying members of the APC nor hold any recognized political standing within Delta Central.

“Senator Ede Dafinone has conducted himself with exceptional dignity, legislative excellence, and unwavering dedication to the people of Delta Central. His record speaks for itself,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its support, the APC declared: “Let it be known that Senator Dafinone enjoys the full confidence and support of the APC leadership and members in Delta State. There is no legitimate recall effort recognized or endorsed by our party or any credible leaders in Delta Central, and we will not stand by while the name of a performing Senator is dragged through the mud.”
