Placing people at the heart of tax administration is essential for enhancing efficiency – Dr Zacch Adedeji

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr Zacch Adedeji, has emphasised that placing people at the heart of tax administration is essential for enhancing efficiency, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable national development.

Speaking at the Annual Performance Award & Retiree Send-Off Ceremony recently held in Abuja, Adedeji highlighted that motivating and recognising staff members is central to achieving the Service’s strategic objectives and improving overall revenue performance.

The event celebrated exceptional employees and honoured long-serving retirees, underscoring FIRS’s commitment to valuing and investing in its workforce. Adedeji described recognition as far more than a formality, calling it a deliberate and strategic investment in the future of the nation.

“Every award, every handshake, every public ‘thank you’ is an investment in our nation’s future,” he remarked, noting that effective tax administration begins with building motivated and dedicated personnel.

According to him, the Service’s recognition of both high-performing staff and retirees reinforces core values such as integrity, professionalism, and dedication — qualities he said are crucial for improving taxpayer relations, increasing revenue collection, and advancing national development.

FIRS, he explained, has adopted a performance evaluation framework that extends beyond measuring revenue alone. The assessment now incorporates the quality of taxpayer service, staff-driven innovations, and the shared sense of mission that unites the Service.
