The Catholic priest and founder of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, Anambra State, Rev. Fr. Obimma Emmanuel, popularly known as Ebube Mmuonso, has stirred controversy after declaring a curse of untimely death on anyone in Onitsha who refuses to vote for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Mrs. Justina Azuka, in the upcoming by-election.
Fr. Mmuonso made the statement while addressing worshippers at his Adoration Ground in Uke, Anambra State. In his remarks, he urged his congregation to support Mrs. Justina Amaka Azuka, the widow of the late lawmaker, Hon. Justice Azuka, who was kidnapped and murdered last year. The priest insisted that she should be allowed to complete her late husband’s tenure, warning that anyone who votes for any party other than ADC in the election would face severe misfortune.
In his exact words:
“If you have sense and you see where they are voting, you should vote for this woman to go and complete her husband’s tenure. If you do not vote for her, you are a wicked person. Anybody that votes for any other party that is not her party tomorrow will not see anything good. In fact, you will experience the same type of death that killed her husband.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the by-election for Saturday, 16th August 2025, to fill the vacant seat in Onitsha North constituency following Hon. Justice Azuka’s tragic death. Mrs. Azuka is contesting under the ADC platform.
It will be recalled that prominent political figures, including Labour Party’s presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, Senator Victor Umeh, and APC governorship aspirant Dr. Obiorah Okonkwo, have publicly endorsed Mrs. Amaka Azuka’s candidacy, an open challenge to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who is backing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Barr. Mimi Azikiwe.
The poll is widely seen as a fierce political showdown for the control of Onitsha, pitting Soludo directly against Peter Obi. All eyes are now on Saturday’s vote to see how this high-stakes political battle will unfold.
