The wife of the Anambra State governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has extended a personal invitation to Miss Jenifer Elohor, a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who was recently assaulted by operatives of the state-controlled Agunechemba security outfit.
Dr. Soludo reportedly reached out to the corps member via a phone call to sympathize with her over the incident and invited her to the Government House for a meeting. According to an aide to the First Lady, Jenifer expressed appreciation for the governor’s wife’s humility and concern but explained that she is currently outside Anambra State. She, however, assured that she would honour the invitation upon her return.
The governor’s wife had earlier condemned the actions of the security operatives, describing them as unacceptable, and vowed that justice would be served to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State government confirmed on Wednesday that the operatives involved in the assault have been arrested. The Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Community Security, Prince Ken Emeakayi, disclosed that although the officers were on legitimate duty at the time of the incident, their conduct was “unacceptable and regrettable.”
Emeakayi explained that the Agunechemba officers, working alongside the central strike force, were pursuing suspected cultists on about 12 motorcycles when the suspects fled into a compound. In the course of their search operation within the premises, the corps member was assaulted.
The state government has since launched a full investigation into the matter and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against those found guilty. Eight operatives linked to the assault were paraded on Wednesday in Awka and are expected to remain in detention pending the outcome of investigations.
