The Grassroot Movement for Tinubu (GMT), a political support group championing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in Ondo State, has expressed concern over what it termed alleged victimisation of its members.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media, Oyewamide Ojo, GMT said it was unsettled by a circulating voice recording purportedly capturing discussions from a meeting reportedly involving the state governor, local government chairmen, and other senior officials.
According to the group, the content of the voice note suggested that some GMT members might be targeted for removal from government positions. Ojo described the development as worrisome, clarifying that the organisation’s mission is purely to showcase President Tinubu’s achievements and mobilise grassroots support through initiatives such as free medical outreach programmes and upcoming sports activities across the three senatorial districts of Ondo State.
He further stressed that GMT has no involvement in issues concerning local government finances and cautioned against interpreting their support for President Tinubu as disloyalty to the Ondo State government.
Ojo also disclosed that the alleged threats had already forced one of the group’s members, Councillor Babatunde Falae, to resign. Despite this, GMT reaffirmed its loyalty to both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu, urging party stakeholders to embrace dialogue and unity rather than division.
In reaction, the Ondo Solidarity Forum, a group loyal to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, dismissed GMT’s allegations as baseless.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Obadofin Ademola, the Forum described Governor Aiyedatiwa as a “peaceful and inclusive leader” and one of President Tinubu’s strongest allies in the state. Ademola insisted that the governor had never authorised any form of intimidation or victimisation, while advising GMT to steer clear of unnecessary internal disputes and instead contribute to strengthening party cohesion ahead of future elections.
