Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has argued that true equity and fairness within the party demand that the 2027 presidential ticket be micro-zoned to the Southeast.
Speaking on Friday during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise Television, Ulasi emphasized that while the PDP has generally zoned the presidency to the South, justice requires narrowing the slot further to the Southeast, as it remains the only southern region yet to produce a president in the current democratic dispensation.
“The party has zoned the presidency to the South, and if there is honesty, they should micro-zone it to the Southeast because, theoretically speaking, we are the only zone in the South that has not produced a president under this dispensation. The Northeast is also in the same category,” he explained.
When pressed about possible candidates who might emerge from the PDP ahead of 2027, Ulasi refused to speculate, stressing that such matters are ultimately in God’s hands.
“I’ll answer that question by saying only God can determine who becomes president in 2027. Only God knows who will even be alive tomorrow morning,” he remarked.
Despite the challenges facing the PDP, Ulasi expressed confidence in its survival and revival. He pointed to recent moves by party leaders aimed at strengthening its internal structures.
“At the last National Executive Committee meeting, nearly seven of our governors were present. It was refreshing to see everyone engaged in discussions about reorganizing the party and putting it on a stronger footing ahead of 2027 and future elections,” he added.
His comments come at a time when the PDP leadership is reportedly making efforts to court former President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to consider contesting under its platform in the next general election.
