SSANU, NASU Proclaims One-Day Nationwide Protest Over Unmet Demands

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced a one-day nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, following the Federal Government’s continued failure to address their long-standing demands.

Acting under their Joint Action Committee (JAC), both unions have instructed all branches across universities and inter-university centres to hold a joint emergency congress on Wednesday to mobilize members for the protest. The planned activities include protest marches within campuses, public display of placards highlighting their grievances, and press briefings to draw attention to their cause.

The decision to embark on the protest was reached by JAC on October 6 after a thorough review of the government’s response to several ultimatums previously issued.

Among the unresolved issues are the alleged unfair distribution of the ₦50 billion Earned Allowances, delay in renegotiating the 2009 Federal Government and NASU/SSANU Agreements, non-payment of outstanding two months’ salaries, non-payment of arrears of 25 percent and 35 percent salary increments, and the non-remittance of third-party deductions for May and June 2022, among others.

It would be recalled that JAC had earlier given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum on September 15 to meet its demands, which was later extended by another 14 days. Both deadlines expired on Monday, October 6, without any concrete response from the government.

In a circular titled “Commencement of Protest Actions” and dated October 6, 2025, signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions emphasized the importance of full member participation to ensure the success of the protest.

The circular stated:

> “Following the expiration of the government’s 14-day extension to address our demands, the National JAC, at its meeting held on Monday, October 6, 2025, directs all branch leadership in universities and inter-university centres nationwide to convene a Joint Congress on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, to mobilize and prepare for a massive and effective one-day protest on Thursday, October 9, 2025.”

The memo further directed that all members of NASU and SSANU in both federal and state-owned universities must strictly comply with the directive, adding that their cooperation and full participation are vital for achieving progress in their agitations.
