Federal Government Acquires 130 Hectares from Ogun State for Construction of Ijebu-Ode

IJEBU-ODE — The Federal Government has officially taken over 130 hectares of land from the Ogun State Government for the establishment of the Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Port — a major step forward in advancing Nigeria’s Blue Economy and reducing congestion at western seaports.

The formal handover took place during a signing ceremony in Ijebu-Ode, symbolizing a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s mission to enhance trade infrastructure, streamline logistics operations, and strengthen the country’s intermodal transport system.

During the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Olufemi Oloruntola, who signed the Transfer of Rights, Control, and Possession on behalf of the Federal Government, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring timely execution of the project.

> “This project represents a strategic investment that will not only improve trade and logistics efficiency but also stimulate job creation and economic growth in Ogun State and across Nigeria,” Oloruntola stated.

Representing Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, emphasized the State Government’s dedication to national growth through its decision to allocate 130 hectares of land for the project.

> “The port will enhance intermodal connectivity between road, rail, and water transport systems, helping to ease the burden on existing seaports in the western corridor. Once completed, it will strengthen the Ijebu-Ode economic cluster and boost regional trade competitiveness,” Dairo explained.

The proposed Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Port is envisioned as a modern logistics hub that will facilitate efficient cargo handling and customs operations for importers and exporters across southwestern Nigeria.

The event was graced by top officials from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, including Dr. Mercy Ilori, Director of Maritime Services; Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council; and representatives from the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

According to the Ministry, the Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Port is a vital component of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to promote regional trade, expand maritime infrastructure, and position Nigeria as a major force in the global Blue Economy.
