CAC to Seize Unregistered POS Terminals From January 2026, Places Fintech Firms Under Watch

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has announced that all point-of-sale (POS) operators who fail to register their businesses will face strict enforcement beginning January 1, 2026. The Commission said any unregistered POS terminal will be confiscated or shut down by security agencies.

In a statement released on Saturday, the CAC condemned the growing number of POS operators conducting business without proper registration, describing it as a “reckless practice” that violates the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) agent banking regulations.

The Commission noted that some financial technology (fintech) companies have been enabling these unregulated activities, adding that such platforms are now under close monitoring. Any fintech found aiding illegal operations will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the CBN.

The CAC urged all POS operators to commence immediate registration, stressing that compliance is compulsory to safeguard Nigeria’s financial system and protect citizens’ investments.

According to the statement dated December 6, 2025, the indiscriminate operation of unregistered POS terminals poses risks to financial stability and must be stopped. The new enforcement measures will take effect from January 1, 2026.
