24 Dead, 14 Missing After Canoe Capsizes in Adiyani Village, Jigawa State

A tragic canoe accident in Adiyani village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has resulted in the deaths of 24 people, with 14 others still reported missing, the Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed.
The incident occurred while the canoe was ferrying passengers across a river, when it suddenly capsized, causing multiple casualties. The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Shiisu Adam, who confirmed the event from Dutse, the state capital, stated that ten individuals were rescued alive following the accident.
CSP Adam disclosed that most of the victims were not residents of the community. Of the 24 confirmed dead, 21 were identified as coming from Yobe State, while three were natives of Adiyani village in Guri Local Government Area.
Efforts to find the missing persons are ongoing, with search and rescue operations involving local divers and community members. The police have appealed to residents, especially those living in riverine areas, to adhere strictly to safety precautions and avoid overcrowding in canoes to prevent future tragedies.
The incident has deeply affected the communities involved, with families anxiously awaiting further updates on the missing. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to bring relief and ensure the safety of river transport in the region.
