President Tinubu Orders Swift Action to Apprehend Perpetrators of Kasuwan Daji Attack in Niger State

President Bola Tinubu has directed top security officials, including the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), to urgently track down and bring to justice those responsible for the deadly attack on Kasuwan Daji market in Niger State.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President condemned the brutal assault, emphasizing that the terrorists must face the full consequences of their actions. He affirmed that regardless of their identity or motives, the perpetrators and anyone who supports or enables them will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable.
President Tinubu also mandated the security agencies to prioritize the rescue of all abducted victims from the attack, underlining the urgency of the situation.
The attack on Kasuwan Daji Community occurred amid a surge in violent incidents across Niger State, reportedly linked to terrorists fleeing recent airstrikes by the United States in Sokoto and Zamfara states. The President expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of Niger State.
He assured that security forces have been instructed to intensify operations around vulnerable communities, particularly those near forest areas known to serve as hideouts for criminals. The President called on Nigerians to remain united and resilient, warning against divisive rhetoric that could undermine national security and social cohesion during this difficult time.
“These times demand our humanity. We must stand together as one people and confront these monsters in unison. United, we can and must defeat them, deny them any sanctuary. We must reclaim the peace and security of these attacked communities,” President Tinubu stated.
Details of the Kasuwan Daji Attack
The attack, which took place on Saturday at Kasuwan-Daji market in the Demo community of Borgu Local Government Area, resulted in the deaths of over 30 people. Gunmen reportedly tied and killed approximately 42 individuals in broad daylight before looting foodstuffs and valuables worth millions of naira and setting the market ablaze. The assailants, believed to have emerged from the nearby National Park in Borgu, operated from Saturday evening into the early hours of Sunday, facing no resistance.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the attack on Sunday, highlighting the growing security challenges in the area.
Rising Insecurity in Niger State
Niger State has experienced escalating terrorist activities in recent months. Notably, in July 2025, 38 villagers from Banga were killed despite the payment of a ransom exceeding ₦50 million to kidnappers. In November 2025, over 300 pupils and teachers were abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area. Following intense rescue efforts involving security forces and community hunters, most of the abducted schoolchildren were eventually freed.
The widespread attacks in Niger and other northern states prompted President Tinubu to order the redeployment of police officers from VIP protection duties to reinforce security in troubled regions.
