The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has strongly condemned the impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, by the State House of Assembly, describing the move as undemocratic and against the will of the people.
The IYC also called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately sack the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of instigating political instability in the oil-rich state.
Speaking during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, IYC President, Alaye Theophilus, expressed outrage over the lawmakers’ decision to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, just hours after the process began at the Assembly.
According to Theophilus, the development exposes what he described as the “true enemies” of Rivers State, insisting that the impeachment move does not reflect the wishes of the people.
“The latest developments in Rivers State have revealed the true enemies of the state. We therefore call for the immediate sack of the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike,” the IYC president said.
He accused the former Rivers governor of undermining democracy and good governance, alleging that his actions have continued to fuel political tension in the state.
“It has been clearly shown that he is not a true democrat but an enemy of democracy and good governance,” Theophilus added.
The IYC further declared its support for Governor Fubara’s second-term ambition and President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, commending the President for what it described as his democratic disposition and efforts to reposition the country.
“The IYC and the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality are fully behind the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 and Governor Siminalayi Fubara for a second term,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, accusing them of gross misconduct.
During plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the lawmakers disclosed that the notice of allegations would be served on the governor within seven days.
However, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the impeachment move, urging members of the Assembly to immediately halt the process.
This latest development marks the second impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara in less than one year, following a similar move in March 2025, which arose after a political fallout between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
At the time, President Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly for six months. The President subsequently appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during the period.
The suspended officials later resumed office towards the end of last year.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Government is yet to officially respond to the fresh impeachment proceedings.
