Rivers Elders Condemn Impeachment Notice Against Governor Fubara, Call for Peace and Due Process

The Rivers Elders and Leadership Forum has expressed strong concern and condemned the impeachment notice issued against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In a statement signed by the Acting Chairman of the forum, Alabo Dr. G. T. G. Toby, the elders emphasized that impeachment is a serious constitutional process that should never be used as a tool for political vendettas or factional conflicts.
Describing the grounds for the impeachment as weak and lacking both substance and public interest justification, the forum warned that the move appears motivated by narrow personal interests rather than genuine concern for good governance.
The statement highlighted that Governor Fubara’s mandate comes from the people of Rivers State, and any challenges to it must strictly follow constitutional provisions, due process, and be based on clear, compelling, and verifiable grounds.
The forum cautioned that the ongoing impeachment effort risks deepening political divisions, eroding public trust in democratic institutions, and further destabilizing the already fragile political environment in the state.
Recalling the recent emergency rule period in Rivers State, the elders noted that the state has not yet fully recovered from the political and social disruptions that ensued. They warned that the current developments could reopen old wounds and heighten tensions at a time when stability and focused governance are critically needed.
Consequently, the forum urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to reconsider its actions and prioritize the collective interest, peace, and progress of the state over partisan or personal agendas.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and constitutional democracy, the Rivers Elders and Leadership Forum declared that it will not remain silent against any action that threatens the stability, dignity, and future of Rivers State.
