The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the Super Eagles ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final encounter against host nation Morocco, urging the team to give everything in pursuit of victory.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, said the entire country stands firmly behind the team as they prepare for one of their biggest tests in the tournament.
“As you prepare to face Morocco in the AFCON semi-finals, I want you to know that the whole of Nigeria stands firmly with you,” the minister said. “Your journey so far has been inspiring. Match after match, you have shown discipline, courage, and belief, reminding us why the Super Eagles remain one of Africa’s most respected teams.”
Nigeria will face Morocco as they chase a second consecutive AFCON final appearance, following their defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the 2023 final.
The Super Eagles booked their place in the semi-finals with an impressive 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals, a performance that has further strengthened their status as one of the tournament’s title favourites.
Describing Nigeria’s run at the 2025 AFCON as historic, Mohammed stressed that the team’s success was not accidental but built on collective effort and determination.
“These victories are not by chance. They came from teamwork, confidence, and a fighting spirit. You have shown that same spirit throughout this tournament,” he said in an open letter addressed to the three-time African champions.
The minister reminded the players that they carry the hopes of millions of Nigerians as they step onto the pitch against the Atlas Lions.
“You carry the hopes of millions of Nigerians who believe in you and draw strength from your performances. Play with the confidence of champions, the unity of brothers, and hunger. Know your history and your worth,” he said.
He urged the team to remain focused and committed from start to finish, adding that they have what it takes to go all the way.
“Stay focused, trust one another, and give your best from the first whistle to the last. Win every ball and fight for every chance. Never doubt what you can achieve together. You have earned your place at this stage. Tonight, go out there and write another proud chapter in our football story. Play with heart. Play with pride. Play for Nigeria.”
Nigeria head into the semi-final on a strong winning run, having scored 14 goals so far — the highest by any team at the tournament.
However, the clash against Morocco is expected to be their toughest challenge yet. The Super Eagles will rely heavily on the attacking firepower of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman as they seek to overcome the hosts and secure a place in the final.
